for 4/24: Rania Matar - Recent Projects - A Girl and her Room

Look at these--
Rania Matar - Recent Projects - A Girl and her Room-- photographs of girls in their rooms. Where are the girls from? What might the photographer, Rania Matar, be thinking or wanting to say?

  1. The girls in the photographs are from all over. Some are from various towns and cities in Massachusetts, Shatila Refugee Camp Beirut, Bethlehem, New York, New Hampshire, and Lebanon. I tthink that the photographer Rania Matar is thinking or wanting to say that young girls no matter where they are in the world, are all the same. In each of the photos no matter if it was a rich suburban bedroom in Massachusetts or a bed on the floor in the Shatila Refugee Camp, each girl had some kind of bright colors, pictures, icons, or clothing that was similar. Also I think the photographer is trying to show awareness of how young girls in the middle east are struggling when it comes to their quality of life compared to an American girls.

  2. The girls are from different parts of MA. I think Matar was thinking this is the life of young ladies in MA. She might have been trying 2 say that we all go through our own little struggles and sometimes express them in the way we live and in our posture. The different posses the young ladies a doing might show what they are feeling. My room personally is just like my life is. A little hectic but still in order to me.

  3. These girls are from different parts of the world. I think what matar was trying to say that each girl has their own personalities, and you really couldn't tell what they were into by just necessary looking at their rooms. I think that most of the girls rooms had white walls which meant that all of them were pure at some point in their life and they eventually started putting things up and covering the white wall, which could mean that different things has happened to them. One of the girls was pregnant but she had a True Blood poster on her wall as well as a picture that she took with her and her friends at Chuckie Cheese. That showed that she is still a young girl with young girl interests but somehow she became pregnant. I think this goes for all of the girls because some of them had piercings and things like that so it could vary depending on the young lady.

  4. I think that each photograph represents each of the girls and what they have been through. I also think that each photograph shows how the girls are feeling at the current moment. Most of the girls are from different parts of MA. The photos show that some of the girls are more fortunate than the others. Some girls have decorations in their room, big comfy beds and then on the other hand you see a photo of a girl sitting on a mat with a rug. The photographer, Rania Matar, may be trying to say that every girl has her problems and no one is perfect no matter how good it may look from the outside. And if that girl's room looks great, she may not be feeling that way. For example the girl that only had a little pallet on the floor as her bed could have been the happiest of all the girls even though she didn't even have a real bed.

  5. These girls are from all over the world. From many different places all over the world. I think the photographer is trying to say that no matter where you come from, you are most comfortable in your own room. Each room expresses a side of each girl. Your room is a place where you can express yourself freely.

  6. The majority of these girls are from different cities in Massachusetts. All of these photos are of girls who look upset or are going through some sort of struggle. I think Rania Matar was trying to say no matter where you are from, people always have hard times. I think these photos were taken in the girls room because your room can say a lot about a person. For example, Krystal from Boston had an edgy punk look to her and in her room she had posters of punk bands on her wall.

  7. These females are from different parts MA and I think Matar was trying to show that even though these ladies are from the same state, different cities have differet styles. You can express a lot of different styles just through your room. You can determine a person's style through the way their room looks or the way they have it decorated.

  8. The girls in these photographs are from different towns in Massachusetts. Matar, the photographer, was trying to show that a woman's bedroom is the one place she can be herself in. She can decorate it how she wants, clean it if she wants, or trash it if she would prefer. In her own room a woman can be alone and be herself because there is no one watching her. She can let loose and be who she wants to be in the comfort of her own room.

  9. The photos of the girls alls showed a expression of themselves. all of the girls had different rooms that seemed to be just a perfect match to how their personality would be. This is the place in which a person can be thier self and show their artistic vaules with the decorations of their room ....this is the place where they can be themselves . That was the imagine that the photographer was trying to reach

A girl and her room contains a very well done reflection on girls going through adolescence. All the rooms shared many characteristics in common regardless of where in globe the pictures were taken. Mirrors were a common trait to the great majority of the pictures. Most of them also showed a great deal of colors but in such unique combinations that made each room a reflection of the girl that owned it. As Matar comments on the prologue for this site, the girls show themselves the way they are, without portraying what the world wants to see from them.
I believe the author of this site wanted to say that all the girls behave the same and have the same fears and concerns when going through this stage in life. Girls from the Middle East showed rooms with similar characteristics than the girls in Spain or USA. I see this as a sort of bonding element for all girls and women.

  11. These girls look like they are from all over the world. Each of them look like they feel alone or have some kind of problem. I think that the photographer tries to address each one of their individual problems showing that not everyone has the same problems and feels the same way about those problems.

  12. Some of the girls are from the United States, others are from the Middle East, or Mexico, or Haiti. I think the purpose of photographing the girls in their bedrooms is to convey to the viewer who that girl is. A person's bedroom is a sacred place, especially for teenagers. Most of the time they can decorate it as they choose; it is a sanctuary for them. Almost every girl had posters on their walls and a lot of the posters were of ideal women (models, actresses, etc). I feel like Rania was trying to capture the struggle between being yourself and being the girl on your wall.

  13. There are girls from all over the world who are being photographed. I think the pictures show how every girl is different. Most girl's room are there own place to hang out and make there own. I feel like it is the one place a girl has to call her own and make the room exactly how they want it. I think Rania was trying to show how she really was in real life and also what she wanted to become later in life.

  14. Thesde girls are form different parts of MA and the photogrrapher may be trying to show that girls have many different things that they go through and have different things they like and can express them throughout there rooms. A girls room is usually something special and private. Looking at a girls room may show people things that they may not have known about her.
