Loved the excerpt from Lilly. I believe she is so "uncool" that she's "cool." She's very "weird" and can be honored for such but that doesn't make her a feminist... YET! Maybe soon we can hear it from her.
As I said in class, I think Lady Gaga is a feminist. The clothes may be revealing, and appear to reinforce a stereotype of women being objects. However she designs her own costumes, she chooses her own wardrobe, and has creative control. Feminism is about controlling our own lives, and doing what we want, even if it means that some may be offended, or say "that's not very lady-like". We are a part of culture that sees women as caretaker's, and mother's first. But the whole point in understanding feminism is to understand that we define ourselves. Our culture may have placed a label on our heads, but we choose whether or not we want to adopt the status quo, or branch out and find out who we are. Angie Petersen
A lot of people believe that Lady Gaga is a feminist, I however do not believe she is at all. I think she is just another pop singer trying to get attention. I mean Lady Gaga was even a stripper at one point in her life which is one of the most degrading things you can do along side of prostitution and pornography. Stripping obviously shows women as being nothing more than objects which is the opposite of being a feminist. Lady Gaga still wears revealing things as a pop singer and people try to make the argument that its for a reason. I am sorry but I do not think many guys would look at her music videos and see that she was wearing those revealing things for a reason. I believe many celebrities try to be things they are not because they can be heard and I think thats exactly what Lady Gaga is trying to do by claiming to be a feminist.
I definately think Lady Gaga can be considered a feminist. She is a strong creative woman who writes her own music and helps to direct her own music videos; she is not just told what to do. While here outfits may be revealing and sexy there is a deeper meaning behind it. Besides, who ever decided feminists cant look sexy? Dressing that way doesn't have to be about pleasing men it can be just for yourself. While her music videos can be violent and sexual Gaga is the one who has control in the end and she uses these themes to expose the music/pop industry for being over sexualized.
Ben- Although I do agree; stripping, prostitution, and pornography are degrading to women (and men), there is a lot of research out there that argues women (and men) who participate in those professions are people who have been survivors of sexual violence. I have no knowledge of anything like that happening to Gaga, but to look at it from a surface level is completely disregarding the situations that people survive. Deviant behavior is indicative of something more. Angie Petersen

Good debate. Feministing.com often publishes posts from sex workers.
ReplyDeleteAlso, are feminists sexy and sexual-or are they supposed to be no interested in sex?
