I love Ellen Page, and I totally admire her for being outspoken. I feel that she simply says what a lot of women are feeling, and are too scared to say out loud. I have seen Juno, and I thought that she was the absolute perfect woman to play that role. There is just something about her that is so believable and down-to-earth. I feel like a lot of young women can relate to her in that movie who may have gone through teen pregnancy themselves or have known someone that went through teen pregnancy. I feel that she really went out on a limb in Juno because it is a risky topic. In general, I feel as though it was a very accepted movie that a lot of people could relate to.
I also love that she is willing to say that she is a feminist. I think feminism needs people like Ellen Page to keep it going. She is outspoken and very opinionated. It is nice to see a woman like her, who is in the spotlight, shedding light on women and their issues.
Often times we as women in society today are scared to speak out on social or political issues in society, were getting better but where definitely not where we should be. I think it's awesome that Ellen Page had the guts to speak out and to actually proclaim she is a feminist. She's saying only what lots of women around the world want to say. I have seen Juno absolutely loved that movie and felt like Heather that she was the perfect person to play the role of a teenage girl in a situation like that.
I feel like lots of young women and teenagers can relate to her in her previous roles in movies and also her as a person.
I have to agree with Heather in saying that Ellen Page is great for the feminist community. I have not seen either of the movies, but from what I do know about them they are both pro-women. As she points out in her interview just because she calls herself a feminist that does not mean that you can assume her belief. As with any person who is feminist each person's beliefs on different subjects are different so you can't group them all into one because they share the same basic ideas. I think that a person like Ellen is great for the feminist community because it will show that there are many sides and put the idea into main stream. Maybe if there are enough people that are in the spot light, like Ellen Page or Lady Gaga, who are feminist some of the stereo types about feminist will be broken. Another thing that I admire about Ellen is that Whip It was directed by Drew Barrymore who wanted the film to look a certain way & wouldn't take no for an answer. ~Rebecca Dudzinski
I have to mimic the things Heather mentioned above. I absolutely LOVE Ellen Page! She is one of my favorite actresses and someone that I really look up to. She is someone that a lot of young women can look up to in a positive way.
The short article resembles my sentiments on how I feel about her too. The more stuff I read about her, the more I like her. I've Juno and Whip It and they are both fabulous movies and she is amazing in each of them.
Anytime someone publicly says they are a feminist always makes me feel good. A lot of people are afraid of the word and most don't fully understand it. So props to her for being able to talk openly about the important issues.
I love Ellen Page and I believe she was a great actress. However, when I first saw Juno, I was thrown off because they portray a clinic in the film as a scary awkward place with a girl who just talks about her boyfriend's junk smell like pie. A majority of pro-choice groups were unhappy with this portrayal especially since Juno was an Indie film seen mostly by teens and young adults. It did not change my opinion about Page because the writers and directors are responsible for the movie, but I also didn't see her declaring herself as a feminist and also a pro-choice activist.
I am pleasantly surprised and glad actually that she is willing to declare herself as a feminist because she is a great role model for many girls.
I appreciate all these comments. Kelly, I had a similar feeling about Juno--in reality places that provide abortion (and safe and legal procedure) are extremely professional and caring.
In addition, I didn't care for the glamorization of unplanned teen pregnancy-- it's glamorized because Page is cool and beautiful--but she had not been thinking to herself that she wanted to be pregnant.
I agree with the comments above, I to think that Ellen Page is a great actress and very outspoken. I think its very inpiring that she spoke out load and said she was pro-choice and she was self proclaimed feminist. Alot of young women that look up to her, so when she speaks out like that it show young girls that they to can make a difference and not be scared to speak thier opionions. ---- Jennifer Nicol
I have not seen either of the movies, so I do not know how good of an actress she really is. however I respect her fro admitting she is a feminist. I love how she explains how she does not love abortion but it should be a womans choice. I also feel the same way no on should be able to tell a woman what to do with her own body. It is her life and decison. If it is something she will regret in the future thats just what she will have to deal with later on in life. Women have fought for years to get freedom and control over what they do. Even now after women finally get their chance to have control they are still being criticized for some of their actions.from what I do know about Ellen Page she seems as if she would be a great person to represent women. I can relate to her views of certain topics even though I am not a feminist myself. (Erica Jones)
I think Ellen Page is awesome and I really admire that she said what was on her mind in the interview. She got straight to the point and she tells it how it is, she tells it how she feels. I saw the movie Juno and fell in love with it. I feel like she is the kind of actress that really gets into the roles that she plays. In my opinion, there is nothing fake about Ellen Page and I think her willingness to say she is a feminist is just her being herself. He being a feminist does not surprise me at all because she seems very open minded. - Taylor McDonald
I think what Ellen Page did in Juno definitely glorified teenage pregnancy. Although her family was not fully excited at first about her pregnancy, I feel as if the situation would be way more dramatic and intense in a regular household. But I still think what she did in Juno shows her ability to identify with many different kinds of women. Ellen Page is universal about women issues but still has her own stand for her point of view which I think makes her a good example of a feminist. -Lindsay Hummel
Actually,I have seen Juno and I must say that I love the movie. Her character on and off screen is outspoken, witty, sarcastic, and funny. Of course she is feminist. In the little article she says she is feminist and pro-life. She believes that there is a reason to live and live like whomever she wants to live like. Also, from the text of the article it seems like she doesn't discriminate neither. In my opinion, I like Juno and I agree with her being a feminist. She's a women, and so far she is don't a pretty good job in the movie industry. She is a good example of a feminist.
I think that it is very brave and big of Ellen Page to openly come out and say that she is a feminist, especially at the age that she is at. I think that it is especially harder for younger people to say they are a feminist because of all the negative stereotypes. And then on top of that it is hard for a celebrity because so many things can have an impact on their popularity so for her to come out and be outspoken with her politics and her beliefs is very impressive.
I love the direction Ellen Page took her brief comment in, I think her take on being a feminist and being pro choice is fresh, to the point and very true. I too am not necessarily completely for abortion how ever if I was in a situation that had that option I would not want men in suits making the choices. I would love to read more on her and her views on things.
I have seen Juno, but not Whip It. At first I didn't really care for the movie, because like others have stated I thought it glamorized teen pregnancy. But after watching it more than once, I saw different ideas emerge, like all the decisions Ellen Page had to make it the movie and how it does kind of relate to real life. I think her willingness to say she's a feminist is awesome! She has her own idea and thoughts and she comes out and tells us, without "beating around the bush." She may be young, but she knows what she is going to stand up for and I like that! -Mary Buss
I agree with Mary her willingness to say she is a feminist is so cool! She wants everyone to know and is not afraid of saying she is a feminist. She wants to stand up for women's rights. I like the point she brings up that she saids people assume that when you are pro-choice you are also pro-abortion. Women should be able to make their own choices because it is their own body. Like Ellen said men should not be able to make women's decisions because for one they will never experience what women will experience. That point to me that Ellen made proves even more that she is definitely a feminist. I have seen both movies Juno and Whip It and thought they were both totally awesome! Both movies were very empowering to women. -Alexa Stel
I envy her for admitting that she is in fact a feminist. Not may women want to admitt that these days because of scrutiny from others; men and women. When she mentioned that she is pro-choice, I said to myself, "i'm not the only one". Alot of people think that because we believe in a women's choice, that we WANT abortion and think it's a positive thing. Women should have a choice in what the do. If abortion could be avoided, that would be great of course. But I think she's right, are we going to resort to women havin table top abortion with hangers? Better do it safely with activits opposing it, then women constantly dying. I envy her ability to say what she means.
I haven't had the oppertunity to watch either one of the movies. I do admire Page for being outspoken and saying she is a feminist, and that she is pro-choice. I believe a lot of people feel this way, and like she said she doesn't love abortion. I feel women should have a choice and be able to live the life they want. I don't believe in abortion as a form of birth control, but sometime unexpected things happen. I'm glad she can be outspoken and at her age feel comfortable in doing so. Ashley Kimbro
I agree with the most of the comments in that Ellen Page is good for the feminist community. She doesn't fit the stereotype of a typical feminist, but she can be admired for her opinions and strength. She brings a sense of humor to her interviews and presence. Ellen comes across as blunt and honest and many people may not like that. However, she is just speaking the truth which is very admirable.
I agree with many of the above posts in that Ellen Page is good for the feminist community. She has a strong voice and seems to not care about what people think of her. She has no one to please but herself. I agree with her in that most people think that if you are pro-choice you are just pro-abortion. However, I agree with Ellen in that women do have an important voice which should be heard, and that includes in decisions such as abortions. I also love that Ellen Page has a sense of humor and almost sarcastic undertones in her interviews. This goes to show that she doesn't fit the uptight feminist stereotype, which is pretty cool and empowering. -Vickie Wilkin
I really like Ellen Page. She is a very outspoken person. She knows what she wants and she isn't afraid to say it out loud. Many women are afraid to say that they are feminist for fear of being judged as a "man hater" etc. She has no one to impress and that makes her great to me. When she said that she is pro choice I felt better because I'm not the only one to say it. I believe women should have the choice and that it's not mans decision. I'm not saying I love abortion but its a personal choice. We have fought for so long to get control over what we do have and it shouldn't be anyone else's choice. If a woman wants to get an abortion it is her and only her decision. Why would we want to take a step back and make it illegal? Ellen shows that feminists come in all shapes and sizes and that feminists don't all think alike. She's a very good role model.
I have no seen either of her movies, but I am sure they are fantastic. When Juno came out, everyone was talking about it. I think it's GREAT that she can openly admitt that she is a feminist. Not many women can because there are always misconceptions about it, making it very difficult to stick by your opinion. When she wrote about the clothes hangers, it really effected me. She is putting out there that if you are not pro life, you will be judged. Being a feminist is not all about hating men and rooting for women 100% about everything. Feminists come in different races, weight, religion, etc. She is very sure of her beliefs, and I think that's wonderful.
I enjoyed exploring Ella page because I feel that she is a very strong and outspoken woman and thats what the femenist community needs. She is a very blunt woman who means what she says and says what she mean. About the abortiong situation she feels that if you are pro life people will judge you and make it seem that you are a bad person but its all about womens decisions and life. Ella isnt for abortions but she feels that women should be able to make their own decisions about their bodies and life. Alot of women can look up to Ella because of her strengths and beliefs in within the feminist community. Her beliefs are very strong and stands on each and every one of them! ------> Denisha L. Price
Well i think that ellen has a unique outlook on being a femisist and i feel that i can agree with her own her views. Along with her any many of the comments above this post i also agree that i dont think abortions are good, but that the women should always have a say in what she wants to do with her body. With her movies i feel that she puts herself out there as caring but in a commecal way. Which in todays society is a good way about going around and talking about "political" issues. In the movie Juno i thought that it was a very funny story that talked about a seriou issue, and by making it funny people were able to understand it better. Ashley merchant
I have only seen the movie Juno and thought Ellen Page was amazing in it! I think she made the movie so popular! The way she was so outspoken with her character makes me like the movie even more. I think she is a feminist because she is so outspoken and is capable of saying what alot of other people wouldn't be able to say. I think that she is a feminist because she stands up for herself and isn't afraid to tell people how it is. I have only seen previews for Whip It and it doesn't really look like a movie I'd watch but Ellen Page is another outspoken character in the film. So I agree with Ellen Page when she says shes a feminist. Rachel Sitter
I think Ellen Page is a great actress. I have not seen Whip It, but I have seen Juno. I think it's great that she has come out to say she is a feminist and I think the roles she plays shows that most of the time. I have heard that Whip It is about a roller skate team full of "hardcore" and powerful women. Juno is very pro-choice and doesn't listen to everyone else's comments about what to do when she is pregnant. She did take being pregnant as a teen lightly, but I think her choice shows the maturity she had at a young age. She was able to choose a family for her child after she met them and thought they were good parents for her baby. Although the pregnancy is glamorized in some way, I think she handles her decision maturely.
I have seen both Juno and Whip it and I believe both are excellent movies with great messages. Both movies have the message be yourself and make decisions for yourself and things will work out their own way. I think Ellen Page would be considered a feminist because she is outspoken in both movies and inspired by females. What inspires her in both movies is the motivation to do what is best for her and the decisions to be made. I believe women should have a say in what they do with their bodies and Ellen Page became the poster child for that message when Juno was released. If she wasn't pro-choice or a feminist I think she would not have taken this role. I like Ellen Page and I believe she could be a role model to many girls and women for what she does and her views. -Elizabeth Leonard
I would also agree with most of the people from above. Ellen Page is very outspoken but positive actress who some may look up to. I also have just seen the video "Juno" which I enjoyed very much. The movie was positive in the way women could choose their destiny for their own baby and not have someone choose for them. Especially by Ellen Page playing this role, she could be considered a feminist. -Molly McWard
Well she seems femanist. I've only seen Juno. But I would say that she isn't very reserved, which is always good because I believe that sometimes being a leader is staying true to yourself, going up against the majority even when the odds against you because you know what you should stand up for. It's true strength to be able to do something like that. It really is. While I myself am not pro-choice, I respect her opinion, and admire her strength. I'd rather women be honest then hide behind the very thing that prevents them from being outspoken. Many of the above comments I have to agree with, valid points.
I have seen Juno and a few (way) less known Ellen Page movies and in the vast majorty of them her role is about being a strong woman/girl and playing a very inspiring and empowering role for women. I love that she is able to say she is a feminist and be so open about her pro-choice views on abortion (because you rarely see stars talk about it). She is very talented and very aware of her beliefs as far as being a women and representing women. I agree with the many people who wrote above me...go Ellen Page -Jennifer Rose
I love Ellen Page, and I thought that her role in Juno was a wonderful image of a young girl going through an extremely difficult time and position. I think that she is a strong-minded young woman who is open about what she thinks. A lot of women have these thoughts, but the actually says what is on her mind. That quality is one that I personally admire, because in our world today, especially when you in in the media like she is, it is difficult to speak your mind honestly. She has a strong set of beliefs, and was open with us about them. She is pro-choice. Her role in Juno was a positive image for all women. She did a wonderful job portraying a young woman who made the decision to give her baby up for adoption. She believes that women should make up their own minds about what to do with their bodies and their own personal choices. I really respect Ellen not only for her role in Juno, but for also being an outspoken young woman whom all young girls and women can look up to and admire.
I haven't seen whip it, but I did see Juno; I did not catch the feminist role in the movie until after a few times of watching it. Her saying she is a feminist now, sort of makes the movie and her role click. She played the part of a teen mother that has to choose what to do with her life when she gets pregnant. The fact that she thought about abortion and went to the clinic is so real. That happens to girls everyday and I think that it is awesome that she played that role. The fact that she voiced her opinion and said she was a feminist if awesome too.
I have only seen previews for Whip It and it doesn't really look like a movie I'd watch but Ellen Page is another outspoken character in the film. So I agree with Ellen Page when she says shes a feminist.

ReplyDeleteI have seen both Juno and Whip it and I believe both are excellent movies with great messages.

ReplyDeleteWell she seems femanist.

I agree with the many people who wrote above me...go Ellen Page
