Is this art, craft, graffiti, vandalism? What do you think?

  1. I feel that it is a little of art, craft, graffiti. Its and art because these people knit for other to see and enjoy their skill of knitting. It is craft because people started off doing it just for themselves as a craft or something to do in their spare time. And its can be considered graffiti because their making public places with it. But I dont see it as vandalism because its not disrespectful and offending anyone. Also because it brings life and/or color to whatever it is placed on. Like the blog says everythign is made od metal and steel and has so color or excitement to it.

  2. Thanks, Kerra, for this very interesting and thoughtful commentary. When others comment, please do not repeat what Kerra has said. You may, though, respond, to Kerra's commnet.

  3. In response to Kerra's post, I think it is art as well but art for a different reason. I think the fact that the knitting is not a practical thing (it does not keep the bus or telephone booth warm) makes it art. We wouldn't expect to see knitting on either of those things so a statement is being made by doing it. I agree with her that this is craft because people were doing decorative knitting for themselves to be creative. I think graffiti involves words and images; the works of art are patterned but do not contain images or words and just because something is out in public does not make it graffiti. I agree with Kerra about it not being vandalism, nothing is being destroyed or defaced.

  4. I think this is art and a craft. This is something you don't see everyday and it obviously requires talent. If somebody takes the time to create something like this it deserves admiration. If the people who designed the bus own it then it wouldn't be considered vandalism. Art is having creativity and expressing it and this is exactly what that represents.

  5. I think the graffiti knitting is art. I believe it is art because it has a sense of personal skill and emotion attached to it that many artist feel with their work. It also brings joy and admiration to the public. It is kind of a nice way of getting the day started when one is spotted. I don't think of it as vandalism because it is not hurting the objects or other people and could easily be removed. Even though this craft has been passed down for many generations, the craft has turned into art in a creative and imaginative way.

  6. I think this is art becasue there is pattern to it and the purpose of it is to be seen and admired or not by others. It looks like their was alot of thought put into creating these paterns and alot of time went into the design and the actual creation, I have never seen anyting like this before and i think it looks really good!

  7. I agree with what everyone has said so far. It is art, craft and graffiti. It is art because someone created this that thought it was beautiful and craft because it obviously took some skill and creativity to produce this. This is a representation of a positive graffiti. When most people hear graffiti they think of things written in spray paint on the side of buildings or trains, which are gang realted and offensive for the most part. This is still graffiti because it is out there for the public to see, but is not offensive and can easily be taken down. It is not vandalism either unless the people that own the bus company or phone booth have a problem with it.

  8. I think what is done is art. It's a way for the person to express themselves in a way they want. I don't believe its vandalism because they didn't destroy anything or hurt anyone in the process of making this art. I also think its somewhat of a craft. Knitting is a craft and not all people can do it. This knitting would also be classified as graffiti too. It's up in a public place were others can see. It's not hurting anyone and if people really do find it offensive or distructive they can take it down without any permanent damage left behind.

  9. in response to everyone else comment i do agree that this is art. Many people express stories, memories and different patterns through knitting. This is also a craft because im pretty sure not everyone can knit; a whole bus and telephone post at that. I feel this is not graffiti. To me graffiti is like expressing words with spray paint. Sometime it can be looked upon as positive words or negative. In this picture it does not seem like its graffitti it is just a beautiful pattern of art. In no way shape or form so i think this is vandelism, unless they knitted the whole bus without permission or in breaks some type of rule or law. This is freedom of expression to me.

  10. I Think that this is creativity. I would consider this art and crafts. This is something that took a lot of time to do and even though it may not be the nicest thing to look at its still someones work of art. This is not something that I would want done to anything that I own but I still respect the persons creativity nonetheless.

  11. I think this is art and crafts too. It is very nice to look at, graffiti can be eye pleasing too if is done right. I think the people that did this have a good vision and talent and it is not something you would see everyday.

  12. I think this is all of the above. Depending on the persons personal point of view it can be all of them but I think it's art. In a way everything is art but this is really creative. I've never seen a knitted bus before lol

  13. Graffiti and vandalism usually involve a negative connotation with dark colors, expression, or context. In my opinion, these two images do not portray this type of impression to any extent. They are both forms of art and craft because they involve a product with formality, texture, emotions, intellect, and possibly symbolism, in a process of arranging items (colorful knitted pieces). Also, it is noticeable that there was a great deal of effort, time, and organization involved in these pieces, proving that the artist must have a true passion for knitting in general. I believe that both the bus and telephone booth are absolutely stunning and interesting. Most people don't see these things on a day to day basis so it would be quite intriguing to come across one.

  14. I believe this is art, graffiti, and craft. Art because it has color and is nice to look at. Graffiti because it is on public property however a lot of people consider graffiti destruction of property and look at it as a negative thing but graffiti can be art as well. Lastly this is craft because knitting is a craft and takes skill and time.

  15. I think this is a from of everything listed, art, graffiti, craft, except vandalism. I think that because it was not the intentions of the creators to destroy anything it is not vandalism. It could be said that they are defacing public property as well, but if the city wanted these creations off of the property they would be able to be removed. This art is not changing the property to a point where it could not be easily changed back, so I just see it as a safe way for people to express themselves through this craft.

  16. I think this should be considered art becasue this is somehting that would take a lot of time and someone who does it would not want it to be destroyed. this should be looked at as a gift and not as something that someone should be puinshed for. these people just want to express themselves and this is just their way of showing it.
